NFL teams reportedly scared off from top-10 talent due to “Robert Griffin III-type personality”

Josh Rosen is a tremendous quarterback and, because of his considerable talent and production, the UCLA quarterback is widely expected to be selected at or near the top of the 2018 NFL Draft. However, there is apparently some divide on Rosen and, instead of coming as a result of on-field concerns, the whispers are reportedly centering on his personality.

Eric Galko of the Sporting News described Rosen as “unquestionably the best quarterback in the 2018 class” but, in digging deeper, his report indicates that sources around the NFL aren’t universally keen on Rosen’s make-up, including something of a strange comparison to Robert Griffin III.

“According to sources who have spoken with people close to Rosen, he has been focused since high school on using football to make money and support the type of lifestyle he wants. He’s OK with challenging the system and being a mouthpiece for divisiveness because he appreciates the attention it draws.

His talent might overrule his non-football concerns, and he’ll likely still be highly valued, but NFL teams will certainly care about this. They don’t want another Robert Griffin III-type personality.”

The NFL is well known for its overall tendency to prefer “boring” prospects that simply live and breathe football with very little life balance. Just how healthy (or unhealthy) that is remains up for debate but, in saying that, it seems wild that Rosen would be punished for attempting to make money as a professional athlete and being outspoken certainly does not disqualify the youngster from becoming an upper-tier player at the next level.

There will be a team eager to select Rosen in the top-five but the fact that questions like these linger is still bizarre.
