In a release Thursday, Volkswagen of America confirmed it would end production of the Beetle in 2019. Volkswagen’s final two models will be the Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL, which will be available in coupe and convertible editions.

“The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans,” Volkswagen of America CEO Hinrich Woebcken said in the statement.

The Beetle, also known as the Bug, was originally designed in Germany during the 1930s, Fortune reported. It caught on worldwide after World War II, the magazine reported.

U.S. production of the Beetle has been halted before. In 1979, Volkswagen stopped selling the car in the United States but continued its production in Brazil and Mexico, Fortune reported. In 1998, the company introduced redesigned versions of the classic car.

The Beetle has been a part of pop culture through the years, appearing in Disney’s “Love Bug” movies and having a cameo in the Woody Allen movie, “Sleeper.”
