Kristen R. Whitted, 46, of Bridgeton, died after the incident on Interstate 170 in suburban St. Louis, according to the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis.

Police from Olivette responded to a report of two vehicles exchanging gunfire while traveling southbound on the interstate, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Authorities said they found Whitted in an SUV and that the two other vehicles had left the scene, KSDK reported. Investigators determined that Whitted, who was alone in the SUV, had suffered one gunshot wound, the television station reported. She was breathing and unconscious, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Whitted was pronounced dead at an area hospital, the newspaper reported. According to the Major Case Squad, Whitted appeared to have no connection to the other vehicles and was caught in the crossfire.

No one else was injured.

“Kristen always strived for more knowledge, wanting to know more about everything,” Whitted’s family said in a statement released by the Major Case Squad. “Never settling on just the surface of a situation. She always got the most out of everything. It showed in her job and her cooking. She never stopped and never settled. Always moving and taking others along with her, it made it easy to open up to her. She was always available and gave an ear to all.”
