The victims included a woman and her two children, ages 8 and 11, The New York Times reported. They were shot in the country’s western city of Cetinje.

The alleged gunman was identified as Vuk Borilovic, according to the newspaper.

Montenegro Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic declared three days of mourning, according to the BBC.

“I invite all the citizens of Montenegro to be with the families of the innocent victims,” Abazovic wrote on Telegram.

“When we arrived at the scene, we saw nine dead bodies, including two children, and another two passed away on their way to the hospital,” Andrijana Nastic, the state prosecutor investigating the shooting, told TV Vijesti.

The alleged gunman, 34, used a hunting rifle to kill the woman and their children, who were tenants in his home, located in the city’s Medovina neighborhood, according to The Associated Press.

Officials said the gunman left the property and fatally shot seven local residents with the rifle, according to the BBC.

A witness told state media outlet RTCG that the shooter “indiscriminately shot people as he walked through the street,” CNN reported.

“For now, it is not clear what prompted (the suspect) to commit such a heinous act, on which occasion he himself was deprived of his life,” Nastic said during a news conference on Friday night.

Cetinje is home to Montenegro’s former royal capital and is situated in a mountainous valley about 22 miles west of the nation’s current capital of Podgorica, the BBC reported.
