The Department of Justice said in a news release that Roque Carranza-Alvarado, formerly of Dallas, Texas, was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Carranza-Alvarado pleaded guilty in March 2022 to three counts of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.

Carranza-Alvarado was arrested on June 13, 2021, in Michigan. At the time, he was heading toward Detroit in a truck loaded with 1,100 cases of wine from California that were meant to be delivered to Roseville, Michigan.

A drug-sniffing dog alerted law enforcement agents to the presence of drugs. Agents found 286 pounds of methamphetamine, 60 pounds of fentanyl, 60 pounds of cocaine and 800 grams of crack cocaine in the cab of the truck, DOJ said in the news release. State police also seized $11,000 in cash from Carranza-Alvarado.

“Fentanyl and methamphetamine are poisoning our communities and killing our citizens. We will aggressively pursue and prosecute those who are harming our communities with dangerous drugs,” U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison said in a statement.

The drugs were estimated to have a street value between $3 million and $4 million, according to WDIV.

“This defendant was caught transporting a very significant amount of drugs that could have done untold damage to Michigan communities,” Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge Orville O. Greene said in a statement. “DEA and our state, local and federal partners, will employ every resource available to hold individuals and organizations, who peddle poisons-for-profit, accountable.”
