Chicago shooting: 2 killed, 7 hurt on Near North Side; suspect in custody

CHICAGO — At least two people are dead and seven others are being treated for injuries after gunfire erupted on Chicago’s Near North Side, authorities said.

Update 4:17 a.m. EDT May 20: Chicago police said a suspect was taken into custody in connection with the incident. Investigators also have recovered a gun, police spokesman Tom Ahern tweeted early Friday.

Original report: According to the Chicago Sun-Times and WGN-TV, the shooting occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of State Street and Chicago Avenue. Chicago police initially said five people were shot, The Associated Press reported.

Police said one victim died, while the others were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment of “serious to critical” wounds, according to the AP.

Authorities have not arrested any suspects in connection with the shooting, WGN reported. No further details, including the victims’ names or a suspect description, were immediately available.
