CDC says hundreds of summer campers, staff, trainees tested positive at YMCA camp

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said hundreds of campers, staff and trainees at a YMCA summer camp in Georgia tested positive for the coronavirus less than a month after being given the greenlight to open.

The CDC just released the report, but the camp involved sent participants home more than a month ago.

Camps across the state, including the YMCA Camp High Harbor in Raburn County, were allowed to open on May 31, WSB reported.

But all campers and staff had to test negative for COVID-19 before attending the camp.

A teen counselor tested positive, and officials started sending campers home June 24. The camp was shut down June 27, WSB reported.

The counselor who tested positive did not show any symptoms, camp officials said, according to WSB.

The CDC said in all 44% of children, staff and trainees at the camp ended up testing positive.

There were 597 residents at the camp. CDC officials said they had the results for 344 attendees who were tested. Officials said 260 tested positive. CDC officials said the number of positive cases may be lower than the true numbers since not everyone may have been tested or the results were not reported.

Officials also said the number may not reflect where those who tested positive were exposed to the virus due to the increase of cases in Georgia in June and July.

They also can not say if individuals abided by physical distancing standards and if masks were used by campers.
