- The mother of a Papa John’s delivery driver tells Channel 2 Action News her daughter had no choice but to defend herself when a man held a gun to her head.

Pizza delivery drivers can sometimes get targeted by criminals out to make a quick buck. Now, all the drivers at a metro Atlanta Papa Johns are talking about the danger one of their own faced Sunday night when a man with a gun forced her to the ground.

"She arrived at the location and a male began approaching the vehicle she thought was there to pick up the pizza," Capt. Stephen Fore with the DeKalb County Police Department said. "When he got to her he produced a handgun and forced her out of the vehicle and on to the ground."

Fore said she had her own handgun in her pocket and was able to reach for it and shoot the suspect.

Someone found 24-year-old Donquaz Stevenson in a nearby yard suffering from a gunshot wound to his face area after being shot by the delivery driver.

Detectives tell Channel 2’s Ryan Young a second suspect jumped into the pizza driver’s silver 2000 Honda Accord and is still on the run. Police think the pizza delivery may have been a setup from the start.

Young talked to the delivery driver’s mother by phone.

She said that her daughter is still in shock, shaken and scared about the encounter. Her daughter is now hoping she can keep her job. Her family is scared she may lose her job because she was carrying a gun at work, even though the gun may have saved her life. 

"She had no other choice. She must have been in fear for her life and she reacted," Fore said.
