(DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.) — Say goodbye to a major metro Atlanta mall -- at least, in its current form.

Developers announced Monday that the former North DeKalb Mall will be renamed ‘Lulah Hills’ when it is soon transformed into a work/live/play hub.

Retail real estate developer EDENS gave the project a greenlight in 2022. The plan is to reportedly tear down the mall and create a 73-acre mixed-use redevelopment project that will include 320,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, 1,700 multifamily units, 100 townhomes, a 150-room hotel and a trail connected to Emory University.

“Lulah Hills is the evolution of community,” Herbert Ames, Managing Director at EDENS, said in a statement. “When it opened in 1965, North DeKalb Mall was a pioneering retail achievement, a one-stop shop for commerce and entertainment under one roof.

“With our redevelopment, we are designing a retail-focused, mixed-use destination that reflects the character of this community and inspires those who visit.”

The new name is a nod to Frederick Law Olmstead, the landscape architect behind the Druid Hills neighborhood.

“Lulah Hills will be intentionally convenient and casual—ideal for a relaxed family outing, the long-overdue date night or a morning cup of coffee,” Ames added. “This place will once again enrich community through innovative design, thoughtful curation and active engagement, just as it was known for almost 60 years ago.

“We look forward to our continued partnership with DeKalb County, Decide DeKalb and this community.”

EDENS also owns and operates Toco Hills, Merchants Walk, Andrews Square, Moors Mill and Park Place.

The demolition of the mall is expected to start at the end of this year. The initial phases of the project will be finished by 2025.
