CONYERS, GA — Salem High School’s football team is preparing to play its first game since a bus crash injured several players and staff members last month, as investigators reveal new details about what caused the accident.

The team will return to the field Friday night to close out its football season following the October 23 crash in Rockdale County.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash was caused by “driver error” as the team traveled home from a game at Greater Atlanta Christian School in Gwinnett County.

Investigators say the 74-year-old school bus driver failed to properly make a right turn from an Interstate 20 exit ramp onto Highway 138.

The bus struck another vehicle before leaving the roadway and overturning.

An inspection of the bus found no mechanical problems that contributed to the crash.

The accident sent 22 students and three staff members to the hospital. All were later released.

The Georgia State Patrol says no criminal charges are expected against the driver.
