MABLETON, GA — A proposed housing development in Mableton is drawing opposition from some residents as the City Council considers rezoning more than 23 acres of land.

David Pearson Communities is seeking to rezone the property along Old Alabama Road to build a single-family home subdivision.

Kevin Moore, a representative for the company, said several townhomes and other developments have already been built along Old Alabama, Cardell and Maxham roads.

“It’s not only highly appropriate, it’s highly consistent with the surrounding area,” Moore said.

Mayor Michael Owens said the development could help create more affordable housing. The development would offer affordable housing options for civil servants, including first responders.

Some residents raised concerns about additional traffic in the area.

“That whole area is already crazy on a good day,” resident Lisa Adams said.

Resident Brenda Nash also raised concerns about congestion and school traffic near Pebblebrook High School.

Residents also expressed concerns about flooding, citing homes that were destroyed in 2005 and 2009. The developer said preliminary floodplain studies have been conducted for the area.

A second reading and final decision on the rezoning ordinance are scheduled for the next Mableton City Council meeting on Thursday, Sept. 3.
