ATLANTA — Cases of the potentially deadly fungus Candida auris, or C. auris, have now been detected in 27 states, including Georgia.
The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it has confirmed nearly 3,500 cases of the fungus this year, although the rate of infection has slowed in recent years.
Health experts say C. auris is a type of yeast that spreads easily in healthcare facilities and can survive for long periods on surfaces such as doorknobs and bed rails.
The CDC says most healthy people are not at risk from the fungus.
