No violations found during Six Flags Goliath roller coaster inspection months ago

Six Flags death: Former ride operators reflect on their training, previous deadly accident

COBB COUNTY, GA — The Georgia State Insurance Commissioner released a statement and details about a incident at Six Flags Over Georgia where one man died and several others were injured earlier this week.

The incident happened on Monday, where Hassan Jihad Kariem fell to his death from the Goliath roller coaster. After the incident, riders were evacuated and Six Flags Over Georgia was shut down as multiple agencies began investigating.

Commissioner John King says Goliath’s most recent inspection occurred on March 16, of this year and no violations, deficiencies, citations, or red flags were reported during that inspection.

King says investigators and engineers are continuing an extensive review of the evidence, equipment, and relevant documentation.

Two investor lawsuits that were filed last year also allege that Six Flags delayed basic maintenance, infrastructure repairs and ride updates before its 2024 merger with Cedar Fair.

Six Flags says its maintenance and safety procedures “meet or exceed industry standards” and that the company remains “committed to rigorous ride inspection.”

Cobb County Police officials confirmed that all four injured passengers are juveniles who were transported by ambulance to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Monday, a spokesperson for Six Flags Over Georgia released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends, and loved ones. We are also providing support to the guests and team members affected. The park team and local authorities responded immediately, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities as they complete their investigation. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing additional details at this time.”

While Six Flags Over Georgia is scheduled to reopen on Friday, the Goliath roller coaster has been shut down while the investigation continues.

The investigation into what happened is ongoing.
