ATLANTA — New requirements for data centers within the city of Atlanta are being considered by the city council.

Officials say the regulation calls for data centers served by the city of Atlanta’s municipal water system to transition to closed-loop water-cooling systems.

District 12 Councilmember Antonio Lewis brought the ordinance to the latest city council meeting.

“Establishing requirements for new and existing data centers directly with the department of watershed management to incorporate such requirements into permits,” Lewis said.

According to Atlanta city officials, this ordinance would also prevent the use of portable drinking water for routine data center cooling operations.

The requirements will now be considered by the city utilities committee.
