FULTON COUNTY, GA — More than 1,000 early voting ballots in Fulton County are expected to be rescanned following equipment issues at two polling locations last month, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger confirmed Tuesday.
The county requested permission from the Secretary of State’s Office to rescan ballots after problems involving two scanners during the early voting period.
According to the county’s request, one scanner was used at Mechanicsville Library on Oct. 21, while another was used at the Hugh C. Conley Recreation Center on Oct. 26.
At Mechanicsville Library, a wheelchair ran over part of a voting machine. At the Hugh C. Conley Recreation Center, a scanner displayed an error message.
Raffensperger confirmed the equipment issues during an interview with 95.5 WSB’s Mark Arum, saying the affected machines were removed from service as a precaution.
“There were actually about 1,000 ballots from advance voting that will be rescanned. The equipment was taken out of service as a precaution due to screen errors, but that’s not going to delay the results in any way because that was advanced voting,” Raffensperger said.
The Secretary of State’s Office is aware of the situation and expects it to be resolved as ballot counting begins Tuesday night.
The equipment problems occurred during early voting, which ended Friday, and are not related to voting taking place on Election Day.
Meanwhile, Raffensperger says voter turnout remains strong across Georgia following record participation during the early voting period.
“We’ve seen over 350,000 voters that have already cast ballots today, so to prorate that out, we’ll be over 1.2 million today, so that’s great turnout,” Raffensperger said.
As of Tuesday morning, no major Election Day voting problems have been reported across metro Atlanta.
