MYRTLE BEACH, SC — A metro Atlanta man who worked as a DeKalb County Schools teacher is dead after rescuing a young girl caught in a dangerous rip current Friday night in Myrtle Beach.

Officials say 47-year-old Derrick Moore of Loganville spotted the girl struggling in the water and went in to help her. Moore was able to get the girl to safety before he was pulled underwater by the same rip current and did not resurface.

Coast Guard crews conducted an extensive, hours-long search. Moore’s body was recovered the following morning.

Witnesses say Moore did not know the girl he rescued. The incident happened after lifeguards were off duty.

Moore was a father of four and a teacher at Rockbridge Elementary School. DeKalb County officials say he previously taught at Jolly Elementary School.

The district said Moore was lovingly referred to as “Coach” by his students and described him as a dedicated educator who cared deeply for his students and school community.

“Throughout his time with DeKalb County School District, Mr. Moore made a meaningful impact on the students, families, colleagues, and communities he served. His presence, care, and dedication to education will be deeply missed,” the district said in a statement.

School counselors and other trained support personnel are available at both Rockbridge Elementary and Jolly Elementary to support students and staff.

“During this difficult time, the DeKalb County School District community will come together with compassion, patience, and understanding to honor Mr. Moore’s life and legacy,” the district said. “Our thoughts are with Mr. Moore’s family, loved ones, colleagues, students, and everyone whose life was touched by his kindness, dedication, and service to DCSD.”
