FORSYTH COUNTY, GA — Investigators say modern technology helped lead them to a suspect accused of stealing a car that was left running outside a metro Atlanta area day care.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened on Aug. 17, outside a Primrose School. A mother had stopped on her way to work and went inside for about 30 seconds to drop off her child, leaving her vehicle running.

The sheriff’s office says a man approached the vehicle that was left running, got inside and drove away.

“Now, if you’re going to steal a car on a whim in today’s times, you should probably know what you’re getting into and take a quick look around for trackable tech and check your surroundings for witnesses,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. “Unfortunately for our mastermind, he managed to pull off a double-whammy of high-tech surveillance blunders,” the sheriff’s office said.

Officials say the victim left her AirPods inside the vehicle and it broadcasted their location to law enforcement. A nearby Tesla recorded the suspect.

“Following the ping of the AirPods, patrol units tracked the vehicle to the entrance of a local subdivision, where the suspect abandoned it—presumably because he realized he didn’t have enough luck for the gas tank to magically refill itself,” the sheriff’s office said. “Now on foot and without a plan, he did the only logical thing: He brilliantly dropped various items along his path like a trail of breadcrumbs, stuck his thumb out, and proceeded to hitchhike.”

With deputies searching the area, members of the warrant unit located the suspect and recognized him from the Tesla video, according to the sheriff’s office.

The suspect was taken into custody and the victim’s vehicle was recovered, the sheriff’s office said. His identity was not released by officials.
