ATLANTA — A major federal immigration operation across Georgia led to more than 1,200 arrests, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE called the operation “Safe Community - Atlanta” and said federal agents arrested 1,226 people who the agency says were in the country illegally.

Of those arrested, ICE said 720 had criminal charges or convictions in the United States. Those charges or convictions included crimes against children, sex crimes, aggravated assault, assault and battery, weapons offenses, drug offenses, burglary, lewd and lascivious acts and driving while intoxicated.

ICE said agents targeted people with criminal histories during the operation.

The agency said it will continue targeted operations across Georgia and other parts of the country.

The Georgia operation comes after ICE recorded approximately 51,000 immigration arrests nationwide in July.

ICE said that was its highest monthly total ever.
