GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — A Good Samaritan’s quick actions may have helped save multiple lives after spotting a fire at a metro Atlanta home and alerting residents early Friday morning.

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services crews responded to the home in the 200 block of Park Place Drive in Lawrenceville around 6:48 a.m. after reports of a fire.

The passerby was unsure if anyone was inside, so they called 911 and began banging on the door. The knocking woke three people inside, allowing them to evacuate.

Firefighters arrived to find a working fire at a single-family, single-story residence with a basement.

The three people who escaped then told firefighters someone was still in the basement.

“The 911 callers also awoke the occupants, which allowed three of the occupants to evacuate the home,” officials said. “Smoke alarms were not activated inside the home at the time of the fire.”

Firefighters removed a victim from the basement. Two people were rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. No additional injuries were reported.

The home sustained heavy fire damage to the basement, first floor and attic on the Delta side of the home. Heavy smoke and water damage was found throughout the home, officials said.

Five people and a dog were displaced, and the American Red Cross was requested to assist.

Fire investigators found the origin of the fire in the basement. The cause remains under investigation.
