ATLANTA — Record-high diesel prices are putting pressure on Georgia truck drivers, with the average price in metro Atlanta reaching $6.31 per gallon Monday morning.

That is up nearly $3 from a year ago, when the average was $3.57 per gallon, according to AAA.

Truck driver Dennis Adams said filling up his truck can now cost about $1,800.

“Back when the prices were lower in the 3’s and 2’s, it would cost about $600-$900, but now you’re looking at $1,800,” Adams said. “It definitely hurts the pocket.”

Adams said higher fuel costs are also affecting which loads truckers can afford to take.

“Some loads won’t pay out enough to cover the fuel costs and that’s what I think a lot of truck drivers are worried about,” Adams said.

Some companies are adding fuel surcharges to transport goods, including items that need to be hauled and restocked frequently at grocery stores.

Adams said truckers can also try to reduce their fuel costs by changing how they drive.

“You have to reduce your speed, you have to make sure you’re not going over 70 miles per hour,” Adams said.

Regular gasoline prices have also increased in metro Atlanta. The average price for a gallon of regular is about $4.03, up from $3.91 a week ago.
