Georgia Leaf Watch: Fall foliage beginning to show across north Georgia

NC-Owl Creek Road - Towns - Sourwood (Georgia Forestry Commission)

GEORGIA — Fall colors are beginning to emerge across parts of north Georgia, with some trees showing early reds and yellows as cooler weather approaches.

The Georgia Forestry Commission’s latest Leaf Watch report says most of the canopy in northwest and north-central Georgia remains green, however, there are several species beginning their fall transition.

In north-central Georgia, sourwood, flowering dogwood, red maple and yellow-poplar are showing colors ranging from dull red to bright red and yellow-brown. Native vines, including Virginia creeper and poison ivy, are also beginning to add color.

The area is currently experiencing abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions in some areas, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Forecasters are expecting rainfall over the weekend followed by cooler daytime and nighttime temperatures, which could help accelerate the fall color changes.

On State Route 17, south of Hiawassee and State Route 180 in the Towns and Union County areas, Georgia Forestry Commission officials recommend visitors enjoy scenic drives to see the early fall colors.

Several fall festivals are also scheduled this weekend, including the Marble Festival in Jasper.

In northeast Georgia, the Leaf Watch report says some maples, sourwood and blackgum are beginning to show color against an otherwise green backdrop. Sycamore, poplar and river birch along streams are showing mild changes to yellow and brown.

Fall wildflowers are also in bloom across lower elevations, including goldenrod, blue mistflower, frost aster, swamp sunflower and yellow crownbeard.

The Georgia Forestry Commission expects peak fall color in the northeast region around the end of October to early November, although weather conditions could shift the timing.

In northwest Georgia, the overall canopy remains mostly green, with sourwood, sumac, sassafras, dogwood and red maple beginning to show red hues.
