NORTH GEORGIA — Radiant fall colors are continuing to develop across north Georgia, with foliage nearing peak conditions at higher elevations as November approaches.

According to the Georgia Forestry Commission’s latest Leaf Watch report, an estimated 87% of the foliage above 3,000 feet in northeast Georgia has changed color, compared with 55% below 3,000 feet.

Oaks are finally beginning to show color, primarily yellow and orange, according to Georgia Forestry Commission officials. Understory and roadside views are looking good at both higher and lower elevations.

The season has gotten off to a slower start, with color development running about a week behind the past several years. However, Georgia Forestry Commission officials expect peak fall foliage during the latter half of the first week of November.

No negative impacts to leaf color are expected from upcoming weather, according to the commission.

For those looking to enjoy the fall scenery this weekend, the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway is expected to provide great views from its overlooks, with roadside color still going strong.

Black Rock Mountain State Park is another recommended destination. The drive through the park offers scenic overlooks and roadside foliage, and visitors can also take in the views around Black Rock Mountain Lake, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Several seasonal events are also scheduled across northeast Georgia this weekend including Helen’s annual Oktoberfest, and the Fall Farm Day which is scheduled for Saturday in Rabun County among others.
