ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of a woman at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Thursday morning.

Officials say a MARTA police detective noticed a woman who appeared visibly distressed walking through the airport shortly after 5 a.m.

When the detective approached her, the woman said she was experiencing a mental health crisis and needed an ambulance. The detective called 911.

The woman then told the detective she needed to use the restroom. The detective escorted her there and waited outside.

After the woman did not come out, the detective asked a female custodian to go inside and check on her. The custodian then called for the detective to come inside.

Officials say the woman was found suffering from what appeared to be multiple self-inflicted stab wounds.

Multiple agencies attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The GBI is investigating the woman’s death.
