FULTON COUNTY, GA — The Fulton County School Board is set to discuss a proposed millage rate increase Thursday as the district waits for county tax funds.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney told board members last week that he plans to ask them to tentatively approve a 1 mill increase, bringing the millage rate to 18.08.
Looney says more than 60% of the district’s revenue comes from county taxes, which have not yet been settled.
“More than 60% of our revenue comes from county taxes and that hasn’t been settled yet, although we do expect for temporary tax collections to start in the very near future, they’re not final until the digest has been finalized,” Looney said.
Looney says the district has already cut $50 million in expenses as it works to reduce costs.
The superintendent says the proposed increase could change before a final vote if the district receives additional information about its finances.
“If in between the tentative vote and the final vote we get additional information that would allow us to not increase the millage rate or reduce the millage rate increase some, then I certainly will be bringing that to the board for consideration and discussion,” Looney said.
The school board meeting begins at 6 p.m. Thursday.
