ATLANTA — A new flu vaccine is expected to be available this flu season for adults ages 50 to 64, according to the FDA.

The FDA approved the vaccine, made by Moderna, making it the first influenza vaccine to use mRNA technology.

Officials say the mRNA technology allows the vaccine to be updated and produced more quickly than standard flu vaccines.

In general, people are encouraged to get their flu vaccine in September or October to allow time for protection before peak flu season, which typically runs from December through February.

“The FDA approval of mFLUSIVA, our fourth approved product in the United States and the first mRNA-based flu vaccine, demonstrates the continued strength and versatility of our mRNA platform,” said Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna. “Flu remains a significant public health challenge, and mFLUSIVA provides an important new option for America’s seniors.

According to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the type of flu vaccine and number of doses needed can vary based on a person’s age, previous vaccination history and the specific vaccine being used.

“Not all influenza vaccines are approved for use in all people,” the CDC says.
