COLLEGE PARK, GA — A 10-year-old boy was honored on Tuesday for his actions in helping save his family and their home during a fire in College Park in August.
The fire happened at Cornelius Chones’ family home on Colonial Drive. Officials say Chones took immediate action, climbing onto the roof with a garden hose to fight the fire while his six siblings safely escaped the house.
College Park Mayor Bianca Broom says the boy’s actions helped prevent the home from being completely destroyed.
“Cornelius’ courageous actions helped keep the fire in check until College Park fire and rescue personnel arrived and quickly brought the fire under control,” Broom said.
Chones has now been recognized with an official proclamation for his bravery.
College Park Fire Chief Sterling P. Jones says the department hopes to continue supporting Chones in the future.
“That young man may be some of the new hires standing behind us, and we’re going to make it our mission to groom and guide this young man as much as we can,” Jones said.
The College Park Fire Department has deemed Chones a hero for his actions.
