Atlanta police arrested singer Ty Dolla $ign on drug charges Wednesday afternoon, less than two hours before he was set to co-headline a concert at Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood.
Just before 5 p.m., the singer, whose legal name is Tyrone William Griffin Jr., was stopped along with six others in the 800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Stephanie Brown said.
Officers said they smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, and a search of the car uncovered marijuana and cocaine.
Ty Dolla $ign, 36, was arrested on charges of possessing less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of cocaine and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. The other six were released without charges, Brown said.
A Fulton County judge granted the California resident $6,000 bond. As of noon Thursday, he was still being held at the county jail.
The singer’s attorney, Drew Findling, disputes the charges.
“He had no drugs on his person at all,” Findling told Channel 2 Action News. He said there were five others in the car, not six as police initially reported. “Apparently there was a small amount of some drug found in the car, and they let five people walk away. And they let the international superstar go into custody.”
His client has no prior criminal history, Findling said.
Ty Dolla $ign is currently on a national tour with G-Eazy and Lil Uzi Vert. The Atlanta leg of that tour continued Wednesday without Ty Dolla $ign. The next stop is Friday night in Tampa, Fla.
He is set to return to court in Fulton County on Sept. 20, Channel 2 reported.
