France is experiencing severe civil unrest and riots that have escalated over the last couple of days. What began as peaceful student demonstrations over school conditions has transformed into a national movement against the rising cost of living, sparking widespread clashes.
The unrest is fueled by a combination of systemic grievances and immediate economic pressures:
- Education & Infrastructure: Student organizations initially sparked the movement, calling for smaller class sizes, more teachers, and building repairs to counter crumbling facilities. Extreme conditions, such as classroom temperatures hitting 40°C (104°F) during summer heatwaves, added to the frustration.
- Cost of Living Crisis: High fuel and energy costs, driven in part by international conflicts, have severely squeezed household budgets. Protesters are demanding immediate relief concerning wages, pensions, and rising rents.
- Police Misconduct: Initial heavy-handed police responses—including an incident where a 14-year-old boy was maimed by a tear-gas grenade—galvanized the public and intensified anger against perceived police brutality.
