On Monday morning, October 19, 2026, an accidental gun discharge at Atlanta Technical College left one student dead and another injured. The incident occurred around 8:45 a.m. inside a classroom at the campus located on Metropolitan Parkway SW.
According to the preliminary investigation by the Atlanta Police Department, a 60-year-old student, identified as Donald Silva, was carrying a firearm inside a classroom when it accidentally discharged. The bullet struck a classmate in the leg. Following the accidental shooting, Silva fled the classroom and went into a campus bathroom, where police later discovered him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The injured student was transported via ambulance to a local hospital. Authorities reported that the victim was alert, conscious, and breathing at the time, and the college confirmed the injuries are not life-threatening
