Actress LisaRaye McCoy is reportedly adding a new regal title to her name: Queen Mother of Ghana.
In a ceremony slated for the day before her birthday, Sept. 22, Electronic Urban Report's Fisher Jack writes that McCoy will be crowned at the Cicada Restaurant & Club in downtown Los Angeles.
The ceremony -- an enstoolment, or installation observance -- is one of the last great African tribal traditions, Jack reports, adding, “It was started in the 17th Century by the Ashanti people of Ghana.” McCoy will reign over Ghana’s Central Region.
“This honor is beyond my wildest imagination,” McCoy said. “I plan to do all that I can by using my platform to bring positive attention to this region. I will serve humbly.”
Queen Mothers are leaders and women of power in Africa, Jack explains, adding, “They play a vital role in local government and wield a lot of social power and influence.”
