Atlantic RecordsJanelle Monáe shared a powerful visual for herlatest single, "Turntables." The visual features scenes of Black excellence and footage from past and present protests against police brutality, including a clip of former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who stars in the upcoming documentary, All In: The Fight For Democracy.
Monáe said the song was about highlighting the "revolution" during Monday's episode of the Jemele Hill is Unbothered podcast.
She said Abrams personally called her to "contribute some new music" for the film, despite being "emotionally fatigued and traumatized by the violence against us and the deaths," at the time.
"I said, '[I'll] watch this. If I'm moved, I'll make myself go into the studio.' And I was," Monáe recalled. "I fell in love with Stacey in this documentary and just fell in love with her even more and had a deeper level of respect for her than I did."
Monáe said she went into the studio thinking: "What would I want to hear to motivate me?' And what would I think a young organizer, a Black queer young organizer, would need to hear to keep them going and motivated?'"
All In: The Fight for Democracy, arrives on Sept. 18, and will explore the laws and barriers of the often overlooked issue of voter suppression in the United States, ahead of the 2020 Presidential Election in November.
Janelle Monáe also has a starring role in the thriller, Antebellum, which also arrives this Friday.
