HBO's 'Insecure' to end with upcoming fifth season; star Yvonne Orji to develop comedy series at Disney+

Say it ain't so! Issa Rae's hit series, Insecure, is coming to an end. HBO has announced the show's upcoming fifth season will be its last.

According to the network, production for the final season begins later this month and "will follow our favorite characters as they evaluate their relationships, both new and old, in an effort to figure out who and what comes with them in this next phase of their lives."

"Very excited to film our fifth and final season!" tweeted Rae. "We couldn't have told a complete story without the tremendous support of our audience and the faith of @HBO. See y'all soon! #InsecureHBO."

Insecure has received critical acclaim since its 2016 debut. Its fourth season debuted last spring with returning cast members, Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales, and Alexander Hodge. It earned nine Emmy nominations in 2020, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Rae and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Orji. It won the Emmy for Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series.

The first four seasons of Insecure are available on HBO Max, while the final season is set to debut later this year.

So what's next for Rae? The 36-year-old will teach the next generation of television writers and film producers through her creative MasterClass. It will break down scenes from Insecure, as well as her YouTube series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.

Meanwhile, Orji is working on her Disney+ comedy, First Gen, executive produced by David Oyelowo and Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films. According to Deadlinethe series is based on Orji's personal experiences as a Nigerian immigrant trying to honor her parent's rich culture, while assimilating to American life.
