Attorney says mother was suffering from exhaustion when she left her 1-year-old in hot car

The attorney for a Gwinnett County mother charged with second-degree murder says the charge should be dismissed because Deja Coleman was sleep-deprived and made a devastating mistake.

Her 1-year-old son died in a hot car late last month.

Police say the mother of three dropped off her other two children at daycare but forgot her 1-year-old son was still in the car before going to work at Northside Hospital. Coleman told authorities she believed she had dropped off all three of her children at daycare.

Coleman’s attorney also said she had been staying at a domestic violence shelter after leaving an abusive relationship. One of her kids is also autistic.
