Natural hair celebration coming to Atlanta

Atlanta will be a natural hair mecca this weekend as the Sisterlocks Freedom Tour makes a stop here.

“It's our 25th anniversary and we're bringing it in with a bang. If you love celebrations, laughter, learning, networking and shopping then the Freedom Tour Atlanta is the place to be,” said Sisterlocks founder JoAnne Cornwell.

Some of the nation’s noted natural hair legends will be present at the conference at The American Hotel by Hilton downtown — including Cornwell, Gunnery Sgt. Cherie Wright, who helped change the military rules regarding natural hairstyles; Pamela Ferrell, founder of Cornrows and Co; and local Atlanta natural hair care guru Sonya “Sistah Nandi” Gilkey, inventor of the Wrap-A-Loc tool.

The conference will include workshops on caring for and styling natural locs and preventing hair loss and self-care workshops such as Natural Beauty with Healing Herbs.

“I am elated to share the platform with other trailblazers who have ignited change, acceptance and rediscovery of self through the empowerment of natural hair.” Gilkey said.

Amber Rose teams up with Simply Be for size-inclusive clothing collection

As a busy mom to 5-year-old son, Sebastian Taylor Thomaz, Amber Rose knows the difficulties of putting together easy-to-wear everyday outfits, especially when you can’t find your size while shopping.

“After I had my son I was 202 pounds and it took me almost a year to lose the weight,” she tells People. “So I was wearing plus-size for a while and I found it very difficult to find easy pieces to throw on that I felt comfortable in.”

Now, she’s taking matters into her own hands with her brand new capsule collection with size-inclusive retailer Simply Be. She’s teaming up with the brand for a 25-piece collection of easy-to-wear wardrobe staples ranging from size 6 to size 32.

“I just love that it comes in all shapes and sizes. I’m very body positive and I didn’t want to leave any girl out, so we have all sizes for every shape of women,” Rose tells People. “That’s pretty much why I wanted to do this line with them.”

And the brand is just as excited to be working with Rose as they launch the UK-based line stateside.

“Earlier this year we re-launched the Simply Be brand internationally and made a firm commitment to creating exclusive capsule collections for our customers, with different styles not offered within our core collections,” Rich Storer, vice president of N Brown Group said in a statement. “We chose to collaborate with Amber Rose because she is a style powerhouse who is fantastically unapologetic in lending her voice and influence to both female empowerment and inclusion to all, no matter your age, size, race, sexuality or gender, all of which aligns to our core brand values.”

Rose’s goal is to help make all women feel “sexy, stylish and confident” and most of all “empowered (to) love their bodies, celebrate their curves and be the best versions of their true selves,” she said in a statement.

And because of her shopping frustrations in the past, Rose was committed to creating functional, everyday pieces for women that also didn’t break the bank (everything in the capsule is between $25-$40).

“I’m a mom, I work a lot. I wanted to have easy pieces that I could dress up or dress down and add accessories to them and wear while on-the-go. I wanted something convenient for girls, to kind of flow on and still look fabulous.”

When asked to pick her favorite piece out of her body-con dresses, skirts, leggings, crop tops and body suits she couldn’t bear to chose just one. “I’m very proud of the whole thing,” she says.

But she does know what she’ll be sending her bestie Blac Chyna. “For Chyna, she likes to wear a lot of dresses, so we do have a lot of those available for her. I would probably send her a whole box. The whole collection is just solid colors. There are no crazy prints like that so you could mix and match everything.”

You can see the collection now at and shop on June 20.

“Knowing Katy, this is how she would want to be remembered,” Brosnahan wrote Wednesday in a post on Instagram. The Golden Globe-winning actress shared a short video of Kate Spade smiling up at her husband, Andy Spade, as the couple danced to mariachi music.

“She had a light that words can’t capture but touched everyone she came into contact with,” Brosnahan wrote. “She was exceedingly kind, beautifully sensitive, insanely talented, funny as heck and one of the most generous people I have ever known.”

Police told The Associated Press that a housekeeper found Kate Spade dead Tuesday morning of an apparent suicide.

“She was effervescent,” Brosnahan wrote. “Hug your loved ones extra tight today.”

Kate Spade is survived by her husband and their 13-year-old daughter.

Issa Rae wears belt with N-word to CFDA Awards

CFDA Awards host Issa Rae had social media buzzing on Monday night — thanks to both her bold outfit choices and her monologue.

The “Insecure” star didn’t shy away from mocking rapper and designer Kanye West, husband of Influencer of the Year winner Kim Kardashian.

“I’m about as fashionable as Kanye is black. Only when it’s convenient,” she said, according to USA Today. “That joke was my choice, just like slavery.”

West came under fire in May for a TMZ interview in which he claimed that slavery was a “choice.” The statements followed days of unpredictable behavior, in which he praised President Donald Trump and referenced the “sunken place” from the film “Get Out” (a comparison wife Kardashian West told Elle was “dumb”).

Rae walked the carpet wearing a custom Pyer Moss blue gown that featured more than 180,000 Swarovski crystals — and it had an added accessory that grabbed even more attention.

Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond spoke to People all about his work with Rae, and how the complex look came together.

“(It was) interesting and new for me because a lot of it was done via phone and pictures because of our work schedules,” he said. “The sketching process was very fun.”

As for her belt, which featured the words “Every (N-word) Is a Star,” it was all Kerby’s idea. It’s the title of a song by Boris Gardiner that played during Pyer Moss’ fall/winter 2018 runway show (and appeared on the soundtrack for Oscar-wining best picture “Moonlight”).

And many on Twitter praised Rae and Jean-Raymond for their choice.

Overall, Jean-Raymond said working with Rae was “important” simply because “it’s Issa.”

“Comedically, she’s my spirit animal. It’s also very important because (the CFDAs are) in Brooklyn, a mile away from where I grew up,” he said about the awards’ new venue this year.

But the gown wasn’t the host’s only look. For the show, Rae changed into a bright green Sergio Hudson double-breasted suit.

The pop star’s hair stylist recently revealed her natural hair look a few weeks back, sending fans into a frenzy. A dismayed Neal Farinah, however, found himself calling out people who couldn’t believe the singer’s flowing tresses were real.

“Sometimes women make choices, and black women are not the only ones who wear wigs, weaves and pieces. Remember that!” he said in an Instagram video.

“And underneath wigs and weaves? Black women have some of the most beautiful, curly hair. It’s a choice a woman makes — and that’s the choice a black woman makes to wear wigs or weaves. If she wants to, ain’t nothing wrong with it!” he added.

“So, the myth about Black women not having hair … y’all think again 'cause they have some of the most beautiful textured hair. Recognize!”
