Conveyor belt sushi concept coming to Metro Atlanta

By Ligaya Figueras

For the AJC

If you want to experience sushi served up in a nontraditional way, take note of Kula Revolving Sushi Bar. The concept combines elements of dim sum with automation by bringing sushi to diners via a conveyor belt that runs through the restaurant.

Kula Revolving Sushi will open at 6035 Peachtree Road, in the Super H Mart complex near Interstate 285, in Doraville. Doors at the 150-seat restaurant will open quietly in mid-July with a grand opening expected in late July, said general manager Christian Luna. The restaurant will operate daily, serving lunch and dinner.

This is the first Georgia location for the California-based chain that also has three units in Texas, with four more planned in the Lone Star State.

What exactly can you expect at Kula? Plates of nigiri and rolls placed on a conveyor belt will pass by your table. Simply grab what you like. To ensure freshness, explained Luna, a microchip is attached to each plate, which alerts its computerized system to automatically dispose of plates after a certain time.

Those looking to place a special order among the more than 130 menu items, which also include tonkotsu ramen, shrimp tempura in an udon noodle soup and crispy rice cakes with salmon, can order from a touch panel located at every seat at the sushi bar as well as each table.

Among beverages, Kula will offer sake and bottled Japanese beer, as well as a variety of nonalcoholic drinks.
